What will you learn in this Level 4 flamenco course?

During this Level 4 online flamenco course, we continue developing technique and knowledge of flamenco dance through more complex choreographies and different flamenco palos.

The work combines technique, compás and coordination with the specific character required for each dance. At this level, we also introduce live music and accessories such as the mantón or abanico-pericón in certain choreographies.

Among other topics, we work on:

• Flamenco dance technique applied to more complex choreographies.
• Footwork at different speeds and levels of difficulty.
• Flamenco compás, including twelve-count structures and different palos.
• Marcajes, remates, escobillas and pataítas within the choreographies.
• Turns and body coordination in more challenging sequences.
• Flamenco character, adapting movement to the specific characteristics of each palo.
• Changes of speed and sequences requiring agility and coordination.
• Working with live music, including singing and guitar.
• Working with accessories, such as the abanico-pericón and mantón de Manila.
• Adapting the dance to the singing, especially in palos where the structure of the cante allows greater freedom.
• Choreographies from different flamenco palos, working on their characteristics and different forms of expression.

Content of the recordings from previous courses

2025-2026 Course

Level taught by Esther Vélez and Juana Márquez.

With this group, we began by working on a Jaleo Extremeño, a fairly complex dance with numerous remates and pataítas. We choreographed the song “Tratante de Vara Larga” by singer Remedios Amaya.

In the second term, we began working on Taranto, a serious palo with a strong emotional intensity and complex remates and escobillas. We used a Taranto piece from the album “Grupo de María Moreno”.

2024-2025 Course

We began the course by working on a Fandango choreography by performer Joselito Acedo.

It was a very musical piece, with little singing and an exquisite melody that won over Esther Vélez, its choreographer, as soon as she heard it.

The choreography also incorporated the mantón de Manila, an accessory that is difficult to handle and which we had to work on intensively, but the result was spectacular in our Christmas 2024 show.

In the second term, we completely changed to the serious and technical character required by Farruca, using a highly musical and instrumental piece by Manolo Carrasco.

It was a radical change, as both the character and the technique are very different. The teacher Esther Vélez danced this choreography by personal choice at the end-of-course show in June 2025, and the result was wonderful.

2023-2024 Course

Our Level 4 students began the course working on a Seguiriya choreography. This is a powerful and profound palo with a compás they were not familiar with and which they were working on for the first time.

We placed a strong emphasis on compás, as well as on the sad character and weight required by this flamenco palo.

We worked with a piece called “Seguiriya” by José Galván, and the result was showcased at our Christmas gala.

In the second term, while continuing to reinforce the previous choreography, we completely changed to the carefree and paseo character required by Alegrías de Cádiz, using a piece with live music by our musicians Gori Mazo and Sara Castellano.

It was a very radical change, and our students adapted very well to the different characters of the two dances.

2022-2023 Course

At this level, we begin working with live music. Our musicians attend class approximately twice a month to help students become accustomed to this type of work, which is very different from working with recorded music.

We began by working on the twelve-count compás with a Bambera.

The structure begins with a falseta in which we added complicated turns and a closing at a speed that was quite challenging for them. We continued with a first letra, second falseta, escobilla, guitar tapao and ending.

We reached this point for our Christmas performance, in which the teacher had to dance with them to achieve a good result, as they were not yet ready to perform it on their own.

In the second term, we completed the Bambera by adding a second letra that had been left unfinished, and we began working on a Rondeña.

The complexity of the Rondeña does not lie in its steps, but in the integration of the singing into the choreography. This is quite challenging because it is a palo in which the singing is relatively free, and since the choreography is fixed, the singing has to adapt to the choreography, leaving aside the natural, spontaneous breaths of the moment.

This also means that the students work a little on improvisation so that they can adapt to changes in the singing of the coplas.

During the second and third terms, we worked simultaneously on the Bambera and Rondeña, which we performed on stage at our end-of-course show.

2021-2022 Course

We began the course working on a Tientos choreography with live music, including singing and guitar.

The musicians usually come to class once a month to rehearse what is being developed and prepare the dances for performances.

This palo is serious and majestic while also requiring mastery of compás, as it contains both very slow sections and very fast and complex footwork.

Every day we reinforce technique, both footwork and movement and body coordination.

In the second term, we created a new Jaleos choreography, recorded with our school musicians.

2020-2021 Course

For students at this level, the work is carried out with live music. We work on choreographies with singing and guitar and with more traditional structures of the different palos.

During the first term of these Flamenco Zoom recordings, we made the first choreography considerably more challenging: a Guajira with abanico-pericón.

This choreography was also recorded as an online flamenco course, specifically course 5.10 Choreography – Guajiras “Música Estudio Flamenco”.

The music was composed by our school and recorded in a recording studio.

The structure of this choreography is:

• Opening falseta.
• Singer’s temple and closing.
• First Guajira letra.
• Second falseta and closing.
• Second letra.
• Escobilla, build-up and closing.
• Initially free ending that finishes with a Bulerías remate and culminates in a very lively feel that ends abruptly.

For the second and third terms, we began working on mantón technique to incorporate it into a Caña choreography, whose structure is as follows:

• Entrance with a short falseta.
• Slow, almost free Ayes.
• Closing.
• First letra.
• Ayes in compás and closing.
• Second letra.
• Falseta ending by releasing the mantón.
• Escobilla and closing.
• Tapao.
• Typical powerful Caña letra: “To el mundo le pide a Dios”.

What are the Level 4 flamenco classes like?

Throughout the course, we maintain progressive technical training, combining it with choreographies that require greater mastery of compás, coordination and the ability to adapt to different characters and speeds.

The usual structure of the classes includes:

• Warm-up and stretching.
• Footwork exercises, progressively working on complexity and speed.
• Arm and hand exercises.
• Work on marcajes, paseos and sequences of greater difficulty.
• Turns, remates and escobillas applied to the different choreographies.
• Coordination work between feet, arms, body and compás.
• Work on the character specific to each flamenco palo.
• Choreography work to apply and perfect everything learned.

Tips for following Flamenco Zoom classes from home

To practise comfortably, we recommend using a suitable floor for flamenco practice. Here you can find some examples of specialist dance floors.

It is also very useful to have a mirror and a stand for attaching a tablet to the mirror, so that you can see the teacher properly during the class. We use this model and it works very well for us.

You do not need to live in Seville to learn with us: you can follow the classes from anywhere in the world and continue advancing in your flamenco dance training.
