Flamenco on Zoom Course – Level 3 Intermediate

With this intermediate-level flamenco course on Zoom, you can continue progressing in your flamenco dancing from anywhere in the world, following our live classes throughout the year and then practising with the class recordings.

This course is designed for students who already have a foundation in flamenco and want to continue improving their technique, compás, coordination and mastery of different flamenco palos. During the classes, we work on more challenging exercises, footwork, marcajes, paseos, remates, pataítas, arms, hands, turns and different body movements, as well as choreographies adapted to the intermediate level.

What will you learn in this intermediate-level flamenco course?

During this intermediate-level online flamenco course, we continue developing flamenco technique and knowledge of flamenco dancing, increasing the difficulty of the exercises, steps and choreographies.

The work focuses on improving coordination, mastery of the compás and the ability to execute more complex movements and sequences.

Among other things, we work on:

• Flamenco dance technique adapted to the intermediate level.
• Footwork, with more complex and faster exercises.
• Posture and body alignment to improve the execution of movements.
• Arms and hands, with different exercises and variations.
• Marcajes, paseos, remates and pataítas within the different choreographies.
• Turns and hip movements, working on body coordination.
• Compases of different flamenco palos and their application to dance.
• Coordination and agility to handle changes in speed and different sequences.
• Work with accessories, such as the abanico-pericón or mantón, when required by the choreography.
• Choreography work with different palos, structures and levels of difficulty.
• Expression and character specific to the different palos worked on during the course.

Content of the recordings of previous courses

2025-2026 Course

This level was taught by Esther Vélez and Juana Márquez.

We began with the Tanguillos de Cádiz compás, a four-count compás with a fast tempo and festive character. During the first term, we created a choreography that we presented at our Christmas gala using “Tanguillos de Cádiz” by José Galván, a didactic instrumental piece of lively and danceable flamenco from his album “Baile Flamenco Vol.1 (2001/2008)”.

During the second term, while continuing to work on and reinforce the Tanguillos de Cádiz, we worked on Soleá por Bulerías, which we brought to the stage through a choreography entitled “A mi hermana”, by the singer Miguel Poveda.

2024-2025 Course

We began the course with Colombianas. For this choreography, we spent the entire first term working on the technique of the abanico-pericón, combining it with step coordination in preparation for our Christmas gala.

The students greatly enjoyed performing on stage and the teachers were very proud of the result.

From January onwards, we continued working on and reinforcing the Colombianas and began a new choreography por Alegrías, placing particular emphasis on the lively and strolling character of this palo.

The piece we worked on was “El Niño del Mentidero” by David Palomar. The group greatly enjoyed this choreography and its result can be seen in the end-of-year show in June.

This course was recorded as an online course during the summer of 2025.

2023-2024 Course

We began the course with Tangos, using a choreography by Miguel Poveda entitled “Tangos de Pastora”.

We worked on footwork, marcajes, remates and pataítas throughout the first term before presenting the choreography at our Christmas gala. Both the students and teachers greatly enjoyed performing on stage.

From January onwards, we continued working on and reinforcing this choreography and began a new one por Bulerías, placing particular emphasis on the festive character of this palo.

The piece we worked on was “Tú tienes un amor para mí” by Los de la Morena. This piece was also included in our Online Courses, with its promotional video filmed at the Seville April Fair.

2022-2023 Course

During the first term, this group worked on a choreography with an added level of complexity: an accessory, the abanico-pericón. This is a large fan that requires a great deal of practice and technique to handle it correctly and effectively on stage.

The choreography was a Guajira, a flamenco palo with a very sensual and flirtatious character that also needs to be developed, as it is not easy to perform. It also features fairly abrupt changes of speed that require considerable agility and coordination.

The work carried out during this first term was very good, resulting in a visually striking choreography for our Christmas performance.

For the second term, we began working on a choreography por Tientos, a palo completely different from what we had previously worked on. It has a four-count compás, with a very slow tempo and very fast sections, and a solemn and serious character in the slower sections and a livelier, more joyful character in the faster sections.

We significantly increased the complexity of the steps for this second choreography and continued working on and perfecting the previous Guajira during the second and third terms.

The final result was spectacular on the stage at our end-of-year show. A great job by the students.

2021-2022 Course

We began the course by working on a choreography por Tientos with live music, featuring cante and guitar.

The musicians usually come to class once a month to rehearse, reinforce what has been developed and prepare the dances for performances.

This palo is serious and majestic and, at the same time, requires a good command of the compás, as it includes both very slow sections and sections with very fast and complex footwork.

Every day, we reinforce technique, both footwork and body movement and coordination.

During the second term, we created a new choreography por Jaleos, recorded with our school musicians.

2020-2021 Course

For students at this level, the work is done with live music. We work on choreographies with cante and guitar and with more traditional structures of the different palos.

During the first term of these Flamenco Zoom recordings, we made the first choreography considerably more challenging: a Guajira with abanico-pericón.

This choreography was also recorded as an online flamenco course, specifically 5.10 Choreography – Guajiras «Música Estudio Flamenco».

The music was composed by our school and recorded in a recording studio.

The structure of this choreography is:

• Opening falseta.
• Cantaor’s temple and cierre.
• First Guajira letra.
• Second falseta and cierre.
• Second letra.
• Escobilla, subida and cierre.
• Ending, initially free, finishing with a remate por Bulerías and culminating in a very lively section that ends abruptly.

For the second and third terms, we began working on mantón technique to incorporate it into a choreography por Caña with the following structure:

• Entrance with a short falseta.
• Slow, almost free ayes.
• Cierre.
• First letra.
• Ayes in compás and cierre.
• Second letra.
• Falseta ending by releasing the mantón.
• Escobilla and cierre.
• Tapao.
• Typical Caña letra: “To el mundo le pide a Dios”.

What are the intermediate-level flamenco classes like?

Throughout the course, we progressively develop technique, increasing the difficulty of the exercises and sequences as the group progresses.

The usual structure of the classes includes:

• Warm-up and stretching.
• Footwork exercises, progressively increasing in complexity and speed.
• Arm and hand exercises, with different variations.
• Variations of marcajes and more challenging sequences.
• Coordination work between feet, arms, body and compás.
• Continuous review of the material learned.
• Choreography work to apply everything learned during the classes.

Tips for following Flamenco Zoom classes from home

To practise comfortably, we recommend using a suitable floor for flamenco practice. Here you can find some examples of specialist dance floors.

It is also very useful to have a mirror and a holder for attaching your tablet to the mirror, so that you can see the teacher clearly during the class. We use this model and it works very well for us.
