3.1 BASIC TECHNIQUES 3 – Intermediate Flamenco Online Course
With the Basic Techniques 3 course, you’ll continue learning all the fundamental concepts of flamenco dance. It’s important to dedicate time to learning; at our online school, each Basic Techniques course is taught over a full academic year, from September to June. Several choreographies are also taught to reinforce what you’ve learned. To understand what this course entails, I recommend you take a look at the lessons at the end of the course description.
It is recommended that you have previously completed the courses 1.1 Basic Techniques 1 and 2.1 Basic Techniques 2, as many of the concepts in this course are a development of those two courses. This course covers fundamental concepts such as footwork exercises and combinations, syncopation, and broken turns.
3.2 CHOREOGRAPHY – Garrotin “La voz del pregonero” – Intermediate Flamenco Online Course
The garrotín is a flamenco style in duple meter, believed to have originated in Asturian folklore (a region in northern Spain). It’s a light, somewhat sensual dance, often accompanied by a wide-brimmed hat. The garrotín is primarily a female dance. If you’d like to learn more about the garrotín and its history, you can consult this link.
This course is developed by Carmen Iniesta, a highly experienced teacher and performer.
It includes exercises in footwork and rhythmic patterns, as well as techniques for handling the wide-brimmed hat. This hat is a common accessory in this flamenco style.
3.3 CHOREOGRAPHY – Alegrías “Sed” – Intermediate Flamenco Online Course
This course is based on a beautiful and lesser-known piece of music: “Sed” (Alegrías) by Marina Heredia. Album: “A mi tiempo” (2013)
The choreography we teach here is designed for flamenco dance enthusiasts who already have a basic understanding of technique and rhythm, but also for those who are just starting out and want to learn from scratch, as each step is explained in detail and is very easy to follow.
In addition, we will teach you some corrections to keep in mind while dancing, such as body position, hand and head movements, and, of course, how to adjust each step to the rhythm of alegrías.
This course is taught by Lola Cano. It is a course created with great care and affection, and this is evident in every explanation Lola provides in the lessons.
3.4 CHOREOGRAPHY – Guajiras “Por culpita de la helá”
Here, we dance with a large fan called a pericón. The first lesson explains the proper fan movement technique, which will help us move it correctly throughout the choreography. Introducing this as an addition to our choreography is a new challenge.
The guajira is a style known as “round-trip,” meaning it has influences from the folklore of the Americas, in this case, Cuba. We appreciate this influence both in its music and in the warm and sensual style of its dance. The time signature is twelve beats.
To follow the course, it would be helpful to purchase the course track: “Por Culpita de la Helá (Guajira)” by Luis de Córdoba. Album: María del Amor.
3.5 CHOREOGRAPHY – Colombianas “Que sería de mi suerte”
Here’s another course where you’ll dance with the pericón fan. This time, Esther Vélez teaches you how to handle it. A whole lesson is dedicated to explaining how to hold and move this iconic flamenco accessory.
You’ll learn the initial movements, which you’ll gradually expand upon with the choreography. La Colombiana is a dance with American influences, a back-and-forth dance. Its rhythm is duple, and it has a cheerful, sensual, and playful character.
The dance structure begins with a guitar-accompanied falseta, during which the initial poses are developed. This is followed by the first verse, with its necessary steps, walks, and flourishes. A second falseta then introduces a section of footwork, and finally, a second verse concludes the choreography. It’s a very showy and eye-catching dance, as the pericón fan makes it even more vibrant.
