What will you learn in this professional-level flamenco course?

During this professional-level online flamenco course, we work from an advanced technical foundation to deepen the execution of flamenco dance and work on highly complex choreographies.

The aim is to continue perfecting technique and work on different flamenco palos, their compás, character and structures, while also incorporating live music and different accessories.

Among other topics, we work on:

• Advanced flamenco dance technique, applied to highly complex choreographies.
• Footwork, working on speed, endurance, precision and different variations.
• Flamenco compás and structures from different palos.
• Turns, remates and escobillas of greater complexity.
• Body coordination and precision in the execution of movements.
• Character and interpretation adapted to the characteristics of each palo.
• Working with live music, including singing and guitar.
• Handling accessories such as mantón de Manila, abanico-pericón, bastón and bata de cola.
• Adapting the dance to the singing and working with different structures.
• Highly complex choreographies, working on their different sections and structures.

Content of the recordings from previous courses

2025-2026 Course

Level taught by Esther Vélez.

With this group, we began working on Romance, adding the bastón as an accessory. Due to its complexity and the high level of coordination required, we continued working on this choreography throughout the entire course.

The choreography was performed on stage with our musicians Sara Castellano and Gori Mazo.

For the second term, we chose a Caña, using the mantón de Manila.

This accessory made the work particularly challenging because of the large size of the group.

The choreography was performed on stage with guitarist Gori Mazo and singer Maite Olivares.

2024-2025 Course

With this group, we began by working on a Soleá, a serious and majestic dance in which we placed a strong emphasis on its temple and melancholic character.

It was one of my favourite choreographies of the year because of its strength and intensity.

The dance begins with an entrance and letra por Soleá, followed by a beautiful falseta and an escobilla por Soleá that changes into a powerful Soleá por Bulerías letra, giving the choreography a significant boost of energy.

This is followed by a short escobilla por Soleá por Bulerías and finishes with Bulerías al golpe.

A creation worthy of major theatres.

In the second term, we began working on Alegrías, incorporating the bata de cola, an element that was new to all the students.

It was difficult to work on because there were many of us for the space available. It was a real challenge for both me and the students, but the result was spectacular.

In the Alegrías, they begin with Bulerías, contrary to the usual structure, and then perform two letras with a falseta in between, followed by silence, castellana and escobilla.

The choreography finishes with a free ending and concludes por Alegrías.

2023-2024 Course

At this level, we began the course working on a Serrana choreography, with a compás similar to Seguiriya but lighter.

We worked on challenging movements and footwork, with a structure that begins with a falseta, Liviana letra, Serrana letra, falseta, escobilla and a lighter Serrana macho.

For the second term, we began working on the handling and technique of the mantón in a Caracoles choreography.

We began with a falseta, letra and falseta while working with the mantón. We then released it to incorporate the abanico-pericón, which we used for our escobilla and final letra.

Some students finished with the pericón and others with the mantón.

2022-2023 Course

At this level, the technique is already quite complex, allowing us to work in a more professional way.

We began the first term with what became the choreography of the year: a Taranto.

This is a very challenging flamenco palo because of its character, aplomo and mastery of technique and compás, as well as the complexity of the coplas.

All of this was enhanced by beautiful falsetas composed for us by our guitarist Gori Mazo.

The result was a choreography of almost 13 minutes, worthy of any tablao or stage.

For the second term, we began working on Fandangos with live music.

We decided along the way to enjoy its coplas rather than overload the choreography with escobilla, resulting in a choreography full of coplas and highly embellished falsetas.

By the third term, our Fandango choreography was almost finished, so we decided to add stage movement, repeatedly changing the students’ positions and creating a choreography with a great deal of movement across the stage.

The result was spectacular.

2021-2022 Course

During the first term, this group worked on Farruca, a dance characterised by straight lines and requiring a high level of technique.

This dance, traditionally more associated with men than women, requires energetic and powerful movements, as well as many turns.

These turns, together with correct body positioning, are the main focus of this class.

During the second term, the choreography was set to beautiful Colombianas music.

As with Levels 3 and 4, both choreographies are danced with our musicians, and the dances are rehearsed with the students once a month.

2020-2021 Course

In these Flamenco Zoom recordings, we worked on footwork technique, placing particular emphasis on endurance and speed.

During the first term and part of the second, we developed variations of remates and footwork that would eventually become a Malagueña choreography, whose structure with live singing and guitar is:

• First guitar falseta embellished with mantón movements.
• Free Malagueña letra, embellished with poses and slow, free movements.
• Second falseta in compás.
• Highly complex escobilla.
• First letra, in this case purely musical, without singing.
• Second abandolao cante letra and ending.

For the second and third terms, we continued reinforcing the Malagueña choreography and began working on Tangos in the same way as the Malagueñas were developed.

We worked on remates, variations and footwork that would eventually become a Tangos de Granada choreography.

Its structure is:

• Opening falseta.
• Footwork variation with guitar tapá.
• First and second Tangos letras.
• Falseta.
• Escobilla, build-up and closing.
• Third and fourth letras.
• Build-up and ending por Tangos.

What are the professional-level flamenco classes like?

Throughout the course, we maintain progressive technical training adapted to the students’ level and focused on perfecting the execution of highly complex movements and choreographies.

The usual structure of the classes includes:

• Warm-up and stretching.
• Technical footwork training, with exercises focused on speed, endurance and greater complexity.
• Arm and hand exercises and body coordination.
• Work on turns, remates and escobillas.
• Work on compás and the different structures of the palos.
• Work on the character and expression specific to each dance.
• Work with accessories, such as mantón de Manila, abanico-pericón, bastón or bata de cola.
• Working with live music when it forms part of the choreography.
• Reviewing and perfecting choreographies to achieve increasingly precise execution.

Tips for following Flamenco Zoom classes from home

To practise comfortably, we recommend using a suitable floor for flamenco practice. Here you can find some examples of specialist dance floors.

It is also very useful to have a mirror and a stand for attaching a tablet to the mirror, so that you can see the teacher properly during the class. We use this model and it works very well for us.
