What will you learn in this advanced-level flamenco course?

During this advanced-level online flamenco course, we work from an established technical foundation to deepen the execution of flamenco dance and take on more complex choreographies.

The work combines technique, compás, coordination, speed and expression, adapting to the characteristics of each flamenco palo.

Among other topics, we work on:

• Advanced flamenco dance technique, applied to more challenging choreographies.
• Footwork, with particular emphasis on endurance, speed and the complexity of the exercises.
• Flamenco compás and structures from different palos.
• Marcajes, remates, pataítas and escobillas of greater complexity.
• Turns and body coordination, working on the positioning and precision of movements.
• Changes of speed and sequences requiring agility and technical mastery.
• Character and expression adapted to each flamenco palo.
• Working with live music, including singing and guitar.
• Handling the mantón de Manila as part of the choreographies.
• Working with the bata de cola, beginning with the basic techniques when this element is incorporated for the first time.
• Longer and more complex choreographies, with different cante structures, falsetas, escobillas and endings.

2025-2026 Course

Level taught by Esther Vélez.

During the first term, we worked on Tangos de Granada, creating a choreography in which we worked with our musicians Gori Mazo and Sara Castellano.

From January onwards, we began working with the bata de cola, an element our students had not worked with before, so we started with the basic techniques needed to handle it.

We took this work to the stage with an Alegrías choreography with our musicians, on this occasion Gori Mazo and Mayte Olivares.

2024-2025 Course

This group began the course working on Fandango. During the first term, we reinforced the compás and letras of Fandango, creating a highly musical choreography with numerous falsetas and four coplas.

We worked on marcajes, remates and pataítas, resulting in a very dynamic choreography that we performed on stage at our Christmas show with our musicians Gori Mazo and Sara Castellano.

In the second term, we began a Farruca choreography at the students’ request, while continuing to reinforce the choreography from the first term.

Farruca, a dance characterised by straight lines, led us to place greater emphasis on turning technique and poses, which was a technical challenge.

The result could be seen at our end-of-course show in June 2025.

2023-2024 Course

Our Level 5 students began the course working on the use of the Mantón de Manila, a difficult technique that requires a great deal of coordination and arm strength to move it.

We combined this work with an Alegrías choreography with live music.

The structure of this choreography begins with a guitar falseta, followed by an Alegrías letra, then another falseta and a more powerful letra in which we release the mantón, followed by a footwork build-up and closing.

The escobilla then begins and ends with Bulerías.

For the second term, we worked on a Taranto choreography, changing both the compás and the character.

This choreography was challenging because of the slow compás it requires, but the final result was excellent.

Its structure begins with a falseta and closing, followed by a single letra and another falseta leading into an escobilla and closing por Tangos.

2022-2023 Course

At this level, the technique is already quite complex, allowing us to work in a more professional way.

We began the first term with what became the choreography of the year: a Taranto.

It is a very challenging flamenco palo because of its character, aplomo and mastery of technique and compás, as well as the complexity of its coplas.

All of this was enhanced by beautiful falsetas composed by our guitarist Gori Mazo.

The result was a choreography of almost 13 minutes, worthy of any tablao or stage.

For the second term, we began working on Fandangos with live music.

We decided along the way to enjoy its coplas rather than overload the choreography with escobilla, resulting in a choreography full of coplas and highly embellished falsetas.

By the third term, our Fandango choreography was almost finished, so we decided to add stage movement, repeatedly changing the students’ positions and creating a choreography with a great deal of movement across the stage.

The result was spectacular.

2021-2022 Course

During the first term, this group worked on Farruca, a dance characterised by straight lines and requiring a high level of technique.

This dance, traditionally more associated with men than women, requires energetic and powerful movements, as well as many turns.

These turns, together with correct body positioning, are the main focus of these classes.

5.2 Choreography – Farruca “Live Music”

During the second term, the choreography was set to Colombianas music.

As with Levels 3 and 4, both choreographies are danced with our musicians, and the dances are rehearsed with the students once a month.

2020-2021 Course

In these Flamenco Zoom recordings, we worked on footwork technique, placing particular emphasis on endurance and speed.

During the first term and part of the second, we developed variations of remates and footwork that would eventually become a Malagueña choreography, whose structure, with live singing and guitar, is:

• First guitar falseta embellished with mantón movements.
• Free Malagueña letra, embellished with poses and slow, free movements.
• Second falseta in compás.
• Highly complex escobilla.
• First letra, in this case purely musical, without singing.
• Second abandolao cante letra and ending.

For the second and third terms, we continued reinforcing the Malagueña choreography and began working on Tangos in the same way as the Malagueñas were developed.

We worked on remates, variations and footwork that would eventually become a Tangos de Granada choreography.

Its structure is:

• Opening falseta.
• Footwork variation with guitar tapá.
• First and second Tangos letras.
• Falseta.
• Escobilla, build-up and closing.
• Third and fourth letras.
• Build-up and ending por Tangos.

What are the advanced-level flamenco classes like?

Throughout the course, we maintain progressive technical training adapted to an advanced level and focused on perfecting the execution of movements and choreographies.

The usual structure of the classes includes:

• Warm-up and stretching.
• Technical footwork training, with particular attention to speed, endurance and precision.
• Arm and hand exercises and body coordination.
• Variations of marcajes, remates and pataítas.
• Work on turns and escobillas of greater complexity.
• Work on the character and expression specific to each palo.
• Work with accessories, such as mantón de Manila or bata de cola when they form part of the choreography.
• Work on and perfect choreographies, applying all the technical resources learned.

Tips for following Flamenco Zoom classes from home

To practise comfortably, we recommend using a suitable floor for flamenco practice. Here you can find some examples of specialist dance floors.

It is also very useful to have a mirror and a stand for attaching a tablet to the mirror, so that you can see the teacher properly during the class. We use this model and it works very well for us.
