What will you learn in this flamenco course for beginners?

Throughout the course, we progressively work on the main elements needed to get started in flamenco dancing. The classes are designed to help you improve your technique while also beginning to dance different palos and choreographies.

Among other things, we work on:

• Basic flamenco dance techniques.
• Body posture and alignment.
• Basic flamenco footwork technique.
• Arm and hand exercises.
• Marcajes and paseos.
• Turns and hip movements.
• Flamenco compás.
• Improvisation, especially por Rumba.
• Learning different flamenco palos.
• Choreographies adapted to beginner level.

Content of the recordings of previous courses

2025-2026 Course

As every year, we began the course at beginner level with basic techniques and improvisation por Rumba. The teachers who taught this level were Esther Vélez and Juana Márquez.

Once we had worked on the basic techniques, we continued throughout the term with learning and practising different steps and movements. We also prepared a choreography to a Christmas carol, which our students performed on stage during the Christmas gala. The Christmas carol we danced was “Tiene María”, by the group Así Canta Jerez.

During the second term and until the end of the course, we worked on the Bulería compás, learning different marcajes and pataítas that we later used in a Bulerías choreography called “Cantarrana”, by the singer from Lebrija Manuel de Paula, from the album “Como oro en paño”.

2024-2025 Course

During the first term and part of the second, the teacher for this course was Verónica Naranjo. In the final part of the course, Esther Vélez took over together with Alba Cano.

We began by teaching the Basic Flamenco Techniques. Throughout the first term, until Christmas, we worked on Rumba Improvisation and prepared a Christmas carol for our Christmas show: “Jaleo”, by Así Canta Jerez en Navidad.

During the second term, we continued working on the Basic Flamenco Techniques and began learning the twelve-count compás por Alegrías, using the track “Somos Marineros” by Niña Pastori. This choreography was performed during our end-of-year show in June.

2023-2024 Course

The teacher for this beginner flamenco course was Alba Cano, a highly professional dancer who, despite being very young, managed to bring out the best in her students.

We began by teaching the Basic Flamenco Techniques: body and footwork technique, arm and hand exercises, hip movements and turns. We then moved on to the four-count compás por Tangos.

Throughout the first term, until Christmas, we worked on Rumba Improvisation and prepared a Christmas carol for our Christmas show, “Tiene María”, by Así Canta Jerez.

During the second term, we continued working on the Basic Flamenco Techniques and began learning the twelve-count compás por Alegrías, using the track “Alegría” by El Junco. This choreography was performed during our end-of-year show in June.

2022-2023 Course

As every year, we began the course by introducing students to the basic flamenco techniques: correct body and foot positioning, footwork techniques, arm and hand exercises, hip exercises and an introduction to turns.

We complemented all this work with an introduction to Rumba improvisation. We worked on the compás and different marcajes so that students could gradually combine them spontaneously.

Before the end of the first term and throughout the second term, we continued working on the four-count compás por Tangos, combining marcajes, footwork and pataítas. All this work was brought together to create a choreography: “Ompare Rota”, by Manuel de Paula.

During the third term, we began working on a different compás, the twelve-count compás por Alegrías. We learned the basic marcajes of this palo and gradually combined steps to create an Alegrías choreography: “La noche no se me acaba”, by Alicia Gil.

All this work was presented in our end-of-year show, which is included in one of the recorded lessons of the course.

2021-2022 Course

During the first term, in these Flamenco Zoom classes, we began the course by explaining the basic flamenco techniques: footwork technique, body posture and alignment, arm positioning and hand movements, hip exercises and turns.

All of this was focused on the binary or four-count compás, one of the simplest compases for beginning to become familiar with flamenco rhythm.

We developed marcajes and paseos over this compás, mainly por Rumbas. Students learned to move from one step to another and combine different movements in order to dance a Rumba through improvisation.

Many of the steps learned were later developed into a simple choreography that we performed at our Christmas show. During October, November and December, we learned a choreography to the music “Tangos en tono de Tarantos”. This choreography has also been recorded as an online course: 1.4 Choreography – Tangos “Tangos en tono de Tarantos”.

During the second term, we worked on a choreography por Alegrías by Niña Pastori entitled “Somos Marineros”.

2020-2021 Course

We began the course by introducing students to the basic techniques of flamenco dancing: footwork technique, body and arm positions, arm movements and pathways, quiebros, hip movements and turns.

During the first term, we introduced the binary compás and began working on steps and marcajes for Rumba improvisation. We continued this work throughout the first term, finishing with a choreography to a Christmas carol por Rumba.

During the second term, following the previous work introducing Rumba improvisation, we used what we had learned to create a choreography por Tangos, specifically “Cómo el agua” by Camarón de la Isla.

This choreography has also been recorded as an online flamenco course and you can find it as 1.11 Choreography – Tangos “Como el Agua”.

During the third term, we worked on the mixed or twelve-count compás with an Alegrías choreography by David Palomar: “Alegrías de Albero”.

What are the flamenco classes for beginners like?

Throughout the course, we maintain progressive work on technique. The usual structure of the classes includes:

• Warm-up and stretching.
• Footwork exercises, progressively increasing in complexity and speed.
• Arm and hand exercises.
• Marcajes variations.
• Continuous review of the material learned.
• Choreography work to apply everything learned.

Tips for following Flamenco Zoom classes from home

To practise comfortably, we recommend using a suitable floor for flamenco practice. Here you can find some examples of specialist dance floors.

It is also very useful to have a mirror and a holder for attaching your tablet to the mirror, so that you can see the teacher clearly during the class. We use this model and it works very well for us.
