Resources for Bulerías. Course Description
In this Resources for Bulerías course, students work in parts of what makes up a bulería choreography known as “pataita por bulerías.” These parts are: markings, lyric endings, and calls.
By knowing each choreographic part and mastering the rhythm, students can create their own choreographic composition to participate in a bulería.
After completing this course, students will have a better command of the rhythm, as it explains how to use each choreographic part with the music, allowing them to improvise and enjoy this festive dance.
The musical theme is titled “Escándalo” by Carmen Linares.

Learn more about Las Bulerías
Bulería is perhaps the most popular flamenco style of all. Its festive, lively, rhythmic, and melodic character invites participation, improvisation, and the unleashing of flamenco expression.
Choreographic terms used in bulería dancing that we study in this course:
Marcaje
It’s used in choreography when dancing to music, embellishing it with movements and being the most relaxed part of a choreography.
Foot and arm movements are combined, changing and nuanced according to the music or the needs of the performer and their choreography.
There is no exact number of repetitions of a marking; the beat can begin or end at any number that is relevant at the time of the performance, but always maintaining the rhythm of the flamenco style being danced at that moment (the term “marking” is used in all flamenco styles). On this occasion, our markings are in bulerías and are danced and choreographed in 12-beat time.
Remate
In dance, the different cadences performed at the end of a desplante or an entire dance are known as remate.
It is often used in rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic cadences in flamenco music. The remate usually begins at the beginning of a measure, but it can begin or be used anywhere within a measure, depending on where the aforementioned silence or cadence occurs. In bulería, there may be a remate:
- When there is a pause in the song, the dancer may remate to fill that silence, which usually lasts no more than one or two measures.
- At the end of a lyric to conclude a dance and song sequence. Thus, they will end together in the music and the movement, creating an effect and unity between the song and the dance.
Llamada
It’s a highly emphasized step that serves to alert the musicians that your dance, or a part of it, is beginning. It usually begins at the beginning of the measure, and the call is prepared at the end of the previous measure with an exaggerated gesture or movement to draw attention and notify the musicians and singer that we are about to perform it.
In bulería, it’s often used before the beginning of a lyric, to make a “change of direction,” or to conclude or begin a part of the choreography. Always in time, this is essential for any flamenco dance and movement.
